I never even considered him for the Hall of Fame, but if you look at his long career as a performer, producer, and collaborator you see that he has had quite an influence on modern rock.

OK, if you still think of rock n' roll as black leather, wailing guitars, groupies and surly bad attitude, Eno is hardly going to top your list (though it seems he has had no great lack of girl action as far as eggheads go). But you cannot overestimate the impact this man has made on popular music over the last thirty years. He's far more than an 'ambient pioneer': the combination of afrobeat and electronica that hung over classic Eighties albums such as Graceland and So began at the beginning of that decade with My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts and his greatest production, Remain In Light. The skyscraping, stadium-filling sound of U2 is largely the refinement of Eno and super-producer Daniel Lanois. And as for Bowie's 'Berlin trilogy' of Low, Heroes and Lodger, try imagining modern rock acts like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails without their influence. Then go and listen to Another Green World and try to get your head around the fact that this mesmerising, still-futuristic album is actually 28 years old. Unbelievable. There's no doubt that rock music since the post-punk era has become increasingly electronic and textural as opposed to melodic, with a heavy accent on 'atmospherics'. Above all other talents, Eno is at the centre of that. Where he goes, people have followed for three decades. How much longer are media tastemakers going to ignore this man just because he's too mercurial, forward-looking and damn intelligent to be pigeonholed as a mere 'icon'?!

If not as an artist, then at least as a producer. Half the reason the Talking Heads are in the hall is b/c of Eno.

I give Eno a lot of credit for his Production work with U2 but this is where the line really has to be drawn in separating rock from other genres. Yes, I may have commented on and voted some R and B, Country, and Jazz acts in but the music of Eno really has nothing to do with rock or pop. It's ambient, spacy, and instrumental. It's basically modern classical music.
