Music is obviously subjective like art, film, etc. Having said that...I'd not heard their music in a long time until I visited Las Vegas around Xmas 2006 and it was piped into hotels etc. as part of a compilation of Xmas music which I don't like anyway (think her song started out "Merry Xmas Darling.") Then the other day I heard another Carpenters song in the dentist's office. I'm sorry but their music practially induces nausea. I forgot how awful they are. I think this music might appeal more to females anyway. It's sugary sweet and corny...second to none.

love all their songs

Since when was Lawrence Welk music considered rock and roll?
chrismin2003 03/13/2008
Maybe if they were being nominated by the "Easy Listening" HoF!!!

To franks point, there are many acts in the R & R HOF that I do not consider rock acts, but since other non-rock acts have gotten in, the Carpenters deserve consideration.

I can't believe that the Carpenters aren't already in. They rocked way harder than most of the MOR acts of their day like Dionne Warwick and Vicki Lawrence. C'mon RRHOF, give them their due!

A huge duo in the 1970s.

In 1969, I was Karen's fiance...to find out the best way to get them inducted, write me and I will tell you. Best wishes, Stew phenom44@yahoo.com

Soft rock it was.....and it played right along side the harder version, and the masses loved it. The Charpenters OWNED the airwaves in the early to mid-70's. They were the very best at what they did. The truely great rock groups, from time to time, where capable of rendering a soft side. They belong.

No fricken way I mean its the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Surely there has to be some thing else that this could fall into. The Carpenters are so far away from Rock, its a dot to them. Why we would they even be considered when there are so many mores deserving.

STUFF THE CARPENTERS THEY SUCK! & KAREN DESERVED TO DIE CAUSE SHE DIETED!

While the Carpenters may not have had driving guitars and big showy stuff, they innovated a lot of recording techniques and musical styles that other bands leached off of. Every band in the world now seems to do some of their own backing vocals with a refined version of the Carpenter's overdubbing technique, for one thing. I would have liked to hear Karen's style evolve further, were it not for that tragic day. Should already be in the Hall just on technical merits, let alone their musical qualities.

Soft rock has largely been ignored by the HoF for some reason.

Pound for pound, no one rocked harder than Karen Carpenter. Not only a great vocalist, but great with the sticks!

I'll be on top of the world, if they stay out. But before Miles Davis...whoopps.
Jed1000 10/12/2005
Can't say I care for the music but that's beside the point. They had quite an impact during their era and I can almost guarantee that they will indeed make it into the Hall of Fame at some point.
makapipi 09/09/2005
they have a sweet sound.
reymansd 08/13/2005
It's a well documented fact that fellow musicians - both peers (Cass Eliott, Dusty Springfield) and subsequent artists (Madonna, Sonic Youth) respected the Carpenters. There's no denying their solid musicianship and Karen's voice as one of the most distinctive in pop music. Their sound has direct roots in classic sixties folk/rock, so it is more than appropriate that they be recognized with this honor.
kingguiness 07/14/2005
They definitely innovated the soft rock movement. A lot of their songs are guilty pleasures of mine. If only someone tied up Karen Carpenter and poured food down her mouth she'd be alive today. What a sad death.

The Carpenters along with Karen's deep textured voice created some of the world's finest quality music of all-time. Sign the petition to send Carpenters to RRHOF. http://www.petitiononline.com/kandrcar/petition.htm l

I need smelling salts when I hear this music.
Phlipper 05/04/2005
The Carpenters created a soft rock revolution and sold more albums than any 70's group. Why is this even a question of whether they should be in the rock and roll hall of fame. Her voice is astounding and their sound was unique.
