Crown Royal...used to be the perfect gift whiskey. Now with all the single malts and designer brands you don't dare to gift this unless you know the person well. This product has been marketed very well. Put it in a cool velvet-like bag with the gold drawstring (very high status marble bag) and place it in a classy looking box. And charge two to three times what it would be selling for in a regular bottle. Don't get me wrong this is smooth, tasty whiskey. But, so is MacNaughton's for one third the price. Yes, the Crown is a tiny bit sweeter, and has that great marketing thing going for it, but if just enjoying a good Canadian whiskey is your aim there are better values for sure. I'm not going to knock C.R. for savvy marketing and it sure doesn't deserve one or two star ratings ever. This is a good four star and would be four and a half if it weren't so expensive. I tried some on the rocks with a splash of water, followed by the same formula with Powers Gold (Irish) whisky. The Powers had a bit more character but the C.R. was sweeter and a bit smoother.

An exceptionally smooth Canadian whisky, too bland for straight drinking but just about the perfect mixing whisky. Overpriced.
laotzu 07/28/2009
We live in a society where people think that whiskeys that come in a velvet bag are mo' better. Most of those purple bags end up filled up with rocks of crack cocaine eventually.
PCPeter774 07/23/2009
This is the best canada can offer? This stuff tastes like seagram 7 to me. I'd personally rather have the 7 because it is cheaper.

I've read over the ratings/opinions on this topic and i figured i'd put my two sense in.. Crown Royal may not be the best drink (favorite drinks vary by person), but if you're looking for the smoothest whiskey to drink, it's Crown... Sure, you pay close to twice as much as you would for Jim Beam or Jack (not sure on this one), but neither taste very good and have too much bite to them... When i'm drinking whiskey, I look for something that has the right ammount of bite but at the same time goes down smooth.. I've never really noticed the vanilla or other scents it supposedly smells and tastes like, but I am a big fan of Crown Royal... The flaw I see in these reviews on alcohol is the fact that everyone is different.. Everyone has their likes and dislikes as far as tastes... Whether it be food, non-alcoholic drinks, or even alcoholic drinks.. I know people who love Jim Beam but can't stand Jack or even Crown.. By the same token, I've known people that hated whiskey in general or people that hated only all bourbons.. Everyone is different.. If you're a whiskey drinker, you want something that is the SMOOTHEST, and has a fairly strong but good taste, Crown Royal is the best you're going to get... Best Whiskey there is... I've seen so many people see how much Crown Royal costs, or heard about how it's "THE SH*T" or whatever and they fear it will get them real "fuc*ed up" and have a terrible hangover... That's what makes Crown Royal the "BEST WHISKEY"... You can drink a 5th of Crown in a night with just a buddy or even by yourself (for heavier drinkers), and you won't really feel much side-effects the next morning (Minus those who chose to combine alcohol(s) and/or drugs, which we all know spells trouble from the get go..)... Speaking from personal experience, me and a buddy finished a 5th of crown in a night and went to bed around midnight or 1am... I had to get up at 5:30am and get to work by 7am... When I woke up, as stated in a previous post, I was hit with the worst morning after drinking crown symptom... thirst/dehydration.. Coming from someone who is a big fan of Crown Royal and drinks it more often than any other drink, the quicket and easiest cure to the dehydration is a decent ammount of water first thing (duh, that's obvious) and then a Gatorade (i know it has salt in it, but it really hits the spot with Crown atleast..) or two depending on how you feel after drinking water and the first gatorade (i'd suggest buying 2 just in case)... Obviously you're not going to want to eat a bunch of food right after that, but give it an hour or so for the liquids to rehydrate your body and then eat something light.. nothing too much.. just enough to make you feel normal again.. It works, trust me, i've learned this from experimenting with friends the next morning to come up with the ultimate next day liqour hangover revival mix..Anyways.. I like Crown... some people dont and that's cool.. Everyone has the right to like or dislike whatever liqour they want.. Or choose to not drink at all... Maybe this helped someone, maybe it didn't... Oh well, I tend to write a lot about things I have a great liking or interest in..Late

This to me is one of the best! I like the nutty taste.
Wiseguy 01/27/2009
Always thought it tasted a bit watered down. Then I found out my 17yr old was watering it down.
whiskeybar 01/26/2009
This is probably the best Canadian. Goes down easy and yes, the bag is a nice addition. Also I like the gift set with the free rocks glasses. Marketing tactics aside, this is a pretty good drink. But don't be fooled, this is not a bourbon, bourbon will keep you much warmer on a subzero night!
irishgit 10/31/2008
Righteous piss. The only good thing about this is the purple bag it comes in. Used to use it to hold my marble collection when I was a kid.
Moosekarloff 10/31/2008
Rednecks like to mix this swill with Sun Drop, which results in a varnishy-tasting lemonade plus. During my travels through the Carolinas, I've seen more fistfights erupt on dancefloors in honkytonks between juiced rebels who were fueled by that concoction than any other. They don't call them "whiskey muscles" for nothing.
XAgent 03/27/2008
Not bad but not a top pick.
fyr3wyr3 03/16/2008
over rated, way over priced. $36 for a fifth. seems like reg ol' blended whisky thats a lil on the sweet side with vanilla. nuthin special
knowledgeofman 01/22/2008
general, run-a-tha-mill, middle-a-tha-road, nothing special, bland.
wakeriderof87 04/05/2007
Decently smooth, not my first choice but not bad, better whiskeys can be had for the money. Can't expect more from Cananda though can you. (joking, joking)
Cydonia33 12/19/2006
All of the Canadian whiskys are thin and wimpy. This one is overpriced to boot.
MadisonSmithwi ck 11/18/2006
Barely drinkable. If you're used to single malt scotches that actually have flavor (like I am), don't bother with this toilet water. This crap that tastes like... alcohol, and that's about it. I suppose if you're used to Ten High or other sub-$10 whiskys, this might be a treat. I ended up just giving a bunch of shots to girls and tell them that it's $100 top of the line stuff... silly broads didn't know the difference.
rabal 09/02/2006
I'm a big fan of Canadian Whiskey. However, I've only tried this particular brand once after buying a bottle while abroad. I was very impressed and the bottle didn't last very long! Very nice indeed.
kerky44 06/20/2006
Smooth drinking rye and proudly Canadian.
BiRyan 01/19/2006
I gotta stick up for my motherland, an rate this well, hey it goes down easy, it tastes good, it's relatively cheap (well, working class luxury), and it'll fu(k you up worse than a pitbull on crank, without putting you in a fighting mood like Canadian Club.
notbadnotbad 01/12/2006
Canada, eh? I said Canada. Canada. Dang, son. Can't you do any better? I want something to go with my moose-meat burger. This stuff is weak.
JOHN HAYEN 06/25/2005
Fairly smooth, but no real texture to it. Lacks aroma and distinct flavor. But it is smooth and has little after taste. Biggest knock is not enough bourbon for hte price.
widgeon 03/06/2005
Canadian anything has a taint about it.
lorne 03/05/2005
way to expensive for what it is, canada has much better stuff than that, try forty creek barrel select or forty creek triple grain.
kidquick 01/22/2005
Not to shabby for the folks who like the fancy stuff. I went to a party with some hip hop artists and they were all drinking it, so it must be cool right?
Wavebacker 01/16/2005
Great stuff, but it's my kryptonite.
weirdfrog 12/28/2004
bahh...terrible, terrible whisky. Just awful. Nasty hangover, no flavor, no aromatics, no pleasant afterburn...might as well drink gasoline. No wonder people mix it with soda. Even Beam is better. 'Course, I prefer a good single malt (try 30 year old Tan Froight (sp?)) or some of the seriously awesome 'shine you can get in the hills back east...that is, if you know who to talk to. Some of those old guys are true artists. The little purple bag is neat though. (Get it? Neat? Oh well.)
jgls 09/23/2004
best way to drink it is to stick it in the freezer and do ice cold shots. smooth.
souljunkie 09/23/2004
To my knowledge Crown is blended whiskey and does not belong in the bourbon Column but speaking generally this is good stuff. If you have no Jack Daniels I will usually ask for this.
StevePI 07/14/2004
Smooth, mellow, goes down easy, is good straight or in a mix. Doesn't leave you feeling like a mule kicked you in the head the day after, like so many other whiskeys and bourbons do.
rola529 04/07/2004
Good canadian blended whisky. goes good wit the classic coke and crown. may be a lil more expesive, cuz i tried the Classic 12, which is cheaper and can hardly tell the difference.
yesmanning 02/05/2004
Love it. Best with gingerale. Just got my personalized purple bag from www.CrownRoyal.com.
thestagemanage r 11/22/2003
Fantastic Whisky! This stuff's worth every penny. Love to mix it with some Canada Dry.
4Horseman 11/04/2003
A glossy marketing gimmick and not a Bourbon at all! Prattrd said it best, "It's crap. It's Seagram's 7 shipped to Canada, bottled, put in a fagilicious purple bag, and "imported" to all you morons who don't know the difference. Go ahead. Waste your money."...
Dragon 5 10/07/2003
Pretentious people drink this stuff in hope that people will think they have taste. I think Crown Royal drinkers have taste - poor taste. The Canadians know less about making whisky than they do about making beer.
Roadrunner 10/06/2003
Great, smooth, wonderful Whiskey. Tried Gibson's 12 year old and it just isn't as good as Crown Royal. If it has to be Whiskey and it has to be good... Go for a Crown Royal. alicat: I've actually stepped up to a crowded night club dance bar and ordered it by name. It wasn't cheap, but it was much much better than the 25 cent draft! It is amazing how many people notice you are drinking something really good when they hear you order it... prattrd: Seagram's 7 Crown = Crown Royal? Interesting opinion. Seems that Seagram's 7 is an "American type" wiskey and Crown is a "Canaidan type". The only way would be to actually try both at the same time... It isn't hard to believe that Crown might have some Seagram's 7 in it, since it is a blend of "the finest whisky's" and Segram 7 isn't a blended whisky at all.
olympiakos7 06/12/2003
the best canadian rye whisky. Try it with ginger ale, a canadian classic!
dane 04/21/2003
Don't know why Crown (a Canadian blend) is on the same page as the Bourbons. Anyway, Crown is the best Whisky made in Canada. If you're in the mood for a Canadian Whisky, go with Crown.
Crown Royal Is Great 03/03/2003
Nothing beats Crown Royal on the rocks.
prattrd 11/26/2002
It's crap. It's Seagram's 7 shipped to Canada, bottled, put in a fagilicious purple bag, and "imported" to all you morons who don't know the difference. Go ahead. Waste your money.
afterglow70 06/12/2001
My all time favorite drink. The best thing to do is drink a couple of C&C's then start in on the Boulevard Pale Ale. You will be singing to the toilet gods by 2am. Not that I know this from experience, mind you. :o)
alicat 01/29/2001
I have never had Crown Royal or not that I know of but this weekend I had a Crown Royal and coke and it was delicious. First I saw the, oh so classy purple sack that it comes in which was a little intimidating. It is very smooth. I usually opt for a Gin and Tonic but the Crown Royal was so tasty that I couldn't resist. I don't think I would ever bust out at a bar and request a Crown Royal and coke but if it's there, why not?
phaley 01/15/2001
Nothing beats Crown Royal's combination of extreme smoothness and surprisingly high alcohol content. The velvet bags make great stash bags when you are done with the whiskey.
Scoot 01/03/2001
This will get you jacked up for a hefty price. That is perfectly okay, though, because the taste of this whisky will send shivers down your spine. I really enjoy this drink. But the next morning tends to be a tad on the woozy side, so be aware of the massive hang overs.
