A top-notch period piece about a family in rural England trying to cope with a war that turned out to be much more brutal than they could have imagined. And I believe one of my favorite young female actresses from that era played the daughter-in-law, Teresa Wright. Greer Garson does a fine job as the mother trying to hold everything together while the war tries to unravel it. Dame May Whitty is great as the crusty rich grandmother of Teresa Wright. Willian Wyler directed this and went on to direct another classic "The Best Years of Our Lives". Also with Teresa Wright. Maybe a bit too sentimental for a modern audience, I still enjoy watching whenever Turner Classic Movies shows the film.

Well acted, but it hasn't aged well. More of a period piece than a classic.
