The great American everyman was the perfect host for the institution. He had an easy rapport with the mass TV audience, although I suspect not everyone felt the same.

I'm a huge Johnny Fan.When I was Young ,hearing the Tonight Show theme & Johnny's voice ,was like a comforting lullaby.My Mom watched Him every weeknight.He was a great Host so hosting the Oscars was a natural for Him.

Johnny Carson had a winning combination going for him. He could do the most outlandish things, talk about any subject he cared to, and yet always retain an undeniable sense of decorum and class without ever looking stuffy. His show was great and his delivery smooth and contemporary. When he laughed he made you want to laugh. I cant think of a better personality type to get an audience through 3+ hours of lengthy boring speeches and dorky musical numbers.

I honestly never saw him do the Oscars. The retrospective piece appears that he did the standard Carsonesque bang-up job.
