The White Rat was a great Cardinals manager and I am sorry he is out of baseball. I watched a great game between the Cardinals and the Braves, back about 20 years ago, when the Braves were still bad. The game went 17 or 18 innings and Whitey fed in every pitcher he had except for next day's starter. The Braves had put Rick Mahler on in the 8th or 9th and he was doing a fantanstic job. Finally Whitey decided to throw in the towel and sent in Jose Oquendo, a shortstop. Oqeudo held the Braves scoreless for 3 innings. Skip Caray, Braves' announcer, opined that Whitey had conceded the game to the Braves, and if the Braves lost this game, it would be the Blackest Day in Braves' history. Finally the Braves scored a run and ended the contest.
