At a bourbon tasting earlier this year, Maker's was the only distiller serving mixed drinks which shows me that they understand full well where their product ranks among bourbons. I find their product too dry and too bland for drinking neat and frankly it tastes more like a cheap blended Canadian Whisky than a bourbon. For slightly less money I can buy Wild Turkey 101, a substantially superior product.

Its simple but excellent bourbon. Golden all the way around, smooth, inoffensive, easy drinking goodness. Complaining about this bourbon is like complaining about a nugget of gold, it may not be a necklace but its still gold! Perhaps a nugget of gold thats artfully crafted into jewerly is superior to a nugget of gold. But some gold jewerly is also gaudy and overdone. You will never say that about Makers Mark, though on the flip side you cant help but be greedy and wish for something more artful and complex. Human nature I suppose but that doesnt diminish this pleasant golden beverage in the slightest bit, delicious.

I am a whiskey drinker with out a geographical loyalty, I like it on the rocks to appreciate and socially mix with cola, Makers Mark is a good sipper but falls short mixed, it is simple in taste, pleasant but lack the intrigue of a better blended fair.
PCPeter774 05/31/2009
Too sweet for my tastes and overrated. There are a myriad of other bourbons I'd rather have.
ZombieReagan 02/12/2009
It is a good bourbon. No more, no less. However, it is overpriced. I would just as likely buy a bottle of Jack Daniels.
JeffZ 02/10/2009
It's ok. I've had numerous bottles of this stuff and while it's still good it's very inconsistent. I've had some great bottles and some OK bottles. It's not their fault, demand has outstripped supply and quality has taken a backseat to quantity with some of their recent batches. Maker' Mark is still a good bourbon and it's great for introducing people to bourbon.
VicVegas 12/31/2008
One of my favorites.
jpetey 12/01/2008
Very smooth and flavorable whisky, one of the top bourbons distilled in kentucky. You will not find a better better bourbon for it's price.
Moosekarloff 10/31/2008
I very rarely drink hard liquor, but, I do sip this stuff sometimes when I do. This is bourbon that goes down like brandy. Absolutely no kick back. And, it puts it to you, believe me.

Very Good whisky, The price is around 33-35.99 a bottle and has a nice taste to it, and a very good nose. A good way to try this whisky is with a splash of some bottle water (dont contaminate your whisky with faucet water). The splash of bottle water really brings out the aroma in this whisky ALOT. you can smell it pouring with scent after the water takes its toll, dont forget to give it a neat slow swish to let it do its job.
jonathantrevor 07/23/2008
A decent whiskey for the price but sort of falls into the Jack Daniels category if you ask me. Try Woodford Reserve, and if you have the cash try one of their "Master's Collection" products. Great stuff.
Troutstroker 06/25/2008
This is my favorite whisky. Great nose with a beautiful finish. One top notch bourbon.
fyr3wyr3 05/28/2008
2.5-3 if i could rate it that way. very flavorful, but too sweet in my opinion to drink neat or on the rocks which is how i like to drink my whiskies. strong tones of caramel, honey, and syrup on the palate. little over rated. Works great though as a mixer for certain beverages like sweet ice tea, and dark hot chocolate.
whiskeybar 05/12/2008
This is the best whiskey I have ever tasted. It is a treat. Very smooth and comforting. Try it.
OceanSoul 04/22/2008
The flavor is very mild and Maker's Mark is a disappointment for the price. It is more reminiscent of Canadian whiskey than of good bourbon.
Spike65 04/08/2008
The Bushmills of American whiskey. Smooth, inoffensive, good introduction to upper shelf product. Too sweet for many palates, it is a pretty good pour. Would have been four stars but it is overpriced where I live. Supply and demand I guess.
fragglerock585 04/02/2008
One of five whiskys(no, I didn't misspell it, I used the Scottish way) like it. NO RYE. The lack of rye and the use of winter wheat brings a very mellow pallate that is followed by caramel, oak, and sweetness. Nectar if I ever tasted it. And this is coming from somebody who visited 9 whiskey distilleries in as many day.
Larz1 02/24/2008
A fine bourbon. Good character, excellent neat or on the rocks, and an excellent finish, but don't contaminate it with cola. It deserves better than a soda pop coverup.
suckapunch101 02/06/2008
This was my first drink ever. It came recommended from an experienced friend. $30 for a fifth of 90 proof (45%) bourbon. At my first sip (which incedentally came from a coffee mug, no decent pubware), I didn't even flinch. Easy and hardly noticeable on the taste buds (It was cold, as in refrigerated, and neat), with a consistant and non-shocking warmth down to my stomach. I had enough to not be drunk, but in a very happy place. No headache, no sickness, no discomfort whatsoever. To the average person, this will be a nice thing to keep in the cabinet for special occasions, company, etc.
five stars: Little pricey (for me), but you get what you pay for.
Garo 01/05/2008
Very good. smooth, good aftertaste. :}
aknntharnld 11/12/2007
smoooth real smoooth. no bitter taste here
ltatc 08/29/2007
smoothest of the big productions, the winter wheat is the key
irishgit 05/30/2007
A very fine bourbon. And one of the few reliable brands that is imported to Canada, or at least the part I live in.
Tobeonsie 05/30/2007
Just a tremendous bourbon, and a hair ahead of Knob Creek.
linemanrt60 04/09/2007
A very solid bourbon. I am from Kentucky and have been raised around bourbon all my life. When Kentuckians think of good bourbon this is definately one of the first to come to mind. Not the best but very close.
wakeriderof87 04/05/2007
A good whiskey, one of my favorites. It goes down smooth, is full of flavor and gets the job done. Always one of my top choices.
Cydonia33 03/04/2007
Thin and watery. More like a Canadian whiskey. There are better and cheaper wheat bourbons, like Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Yr. Old, WL Weller 12 Yr. Old or Antique 107 Proof. Got to give the MM people credit for marketing though.
jsthornton 01/20/2007
Simply the smoothest most beautiful aromatic Bourbon available. All that great oak adds so much vanilla aroma and taste. Unsurpassable depth.
rabal 08/26/2006
While not overly fond of Bourbon, after being introduced to Maker's Mark by a friend, I have to say it is pretty good. Smooth and easy to drink, either straight or with a mixer. Best Bourbon I've tasted yet.
jattaway1 06/28/2006
The lemon finish really sets this bourbon out for me. It is perfect in a what I call a Maker's Sour. Straight it is smooth and pleasent. My favorite liqour by far.
JOHN HAYEN 06/27/2006
a very good, easy bourbon to drink. Not strong or distinctive in taste but has it's own destinctive flavor. If you like smooth but not bold or spicey this would be good for you. Also unigue features like wax dipped seals.
fatfree49 06/24/2006
A very easy to drink bourbon. a little on the "soft" side, but very drinkable. An excellent choice for the price.
H. Tenthorey 01/30/2006
I love this stuff! I went on the distillery tour while on a buisiness trip and was blown away by the attention to quality they put into their product. Because it was a Sunday, there were no free samples. So the next day I ran out to get some, and am today (after 2 more bottles) compleatly sold on the fact that it's the best Bourbon on the market!
notbadnotbad 01/12/2006
A good solid bourbon. If you like yours with ginger ale or Coke, this should be your call brand. Drinking it neat, you may find it a bit on the harsh side. I think it's too sweet but bourbon is no longer my prefered poison.
Johnny99 12/30/2005
Best of the small batch stuff. This is about the only type of liquor my sister will drink so I always pick some up when she's going to be in town. To my taste it has very little of what may be called "traditional" bourbon flavor. As a previous reviewer said, it has strong overtones of honey, as well as vanilla and finishes mildly but warmly. A little cloying straight, but because of the sweetness it makes the best mint julep on the face of the earth.
civiletti 11/02/2005
Overrated, overstocked, insipid.
cothrige 11/02/2005
A very good smooth bourbon. It would seem unrealistic to insist on comparing this to the many much more muscular products from Kentucky, as it has more in common with Balvanie than Wild Turkey. It begins sweet, with hints of citrus and chocolate, but hangs on with a long warm finish. While delicate at first, it is certainly not a lightweight, and has a very strong personality. Clean and approachable, it uses finesse rather than strength to make its way, and I think succeeds very well. It is best enjoyed neat, or with a very small splash of water to open up the aroma. Ice has the undesirable effect, as it usually does, of weakening the aroma and flavors.

Love the Maker's Mark. Like it straight, and like it in Manhattans... a surefire sign that I've been out and about too long is when you see me with a Maker's Mark Manhattan in my hand.
widgeon 02/17/2005
Overpriced swill
oldrip 02/17/2005
Good starter bourbon, but if you move past it you'll realize it's not the premium drink you thought to begin with. The wheat small (flavor) grain makes it sweeter and more approachable than more spicy rye bourbons, but it's pretty one-dimensional and lacking in distict character.
kidquick 01/22/2005
It's very good, not the rolls royce of whiskies, but maybe a cadillac. Actually, whiskey and cars don't mix...
smitbria 01/15/2005
This is now the only bourbon I let pass these lips. If you deserve the best make sure your sippin Maker's. The color the aroma and the taste are all top notch.
Geoff Yuen 12/10/2004
Smooth, refined, and sensual.
Breson 11/14/2004
OK bourbon. Horribly overated. Not bad but has a musty aftertaste like many overly wheated bourbons. Although it might be one of the best bourbons to make a manhattan with. I like my bourbon neat or with a little water and this whiskey does not hold up that well. Lots of better choices for the money
PattersonVanZa nt 11/10/2004
Overrated; Gentleman Jack, Old Grand-Dad, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, and especially Elijah Craig 12 yr old... these are the bourbons I love... and in bars, all they have is (sigh) Knob's Creek, Jack Black, Beam, and this stuff... oh well, it's okay, if you're in a bar and have NO choices...
texastwo 10/23/2004
Does it get much better than this? Attention to detail makes this one the best. Not bitter (like Jack)...taste the sweetness...great to sip or mix!
ekalrairb 10/19/2004
Good stuff... a bit pricey but it really is the best available in the U.S.
brentumsl 09/22/2004
Very smooth and worth the cost. A little ice brings out the flavor but don't over do it. Two or three cubes.
ernesttubb 09/01/2004
I just started getting into whisky (starting with Scotch) about a year or two ago, and I am UTTERLY new to Bourbon, but I got one of those little airplane bottles of Maker's a couple of days ago, and was quite pleased. Gentle, not too sweet (certainly less so than Jack Daniel's -- and yes, I know JD technically is not Bourbon). I think I'm going to make Maker's a regular part of my drinking life, especially considering its reasonable price.
