 | oscargamblesfro (76) 11/11/2005 | Along with the Elevators and Bubble Puppy, this act was amongst the cream of Texas psych. Their first album is very fine, and they featured a great guitar player named, if memory serves, Rob Knust , who had a distinctive sound, and Burton Cummings soundalike Dennis Keller. This well-produced debut featured intriguing covers by the likes of Wilson Pickett, Neil Young, and the Beatles, plus solid originals, such as the eerie, flowing "Filligree and Shadow," softer ballads like "Come with Me and "Unlock My Door" and the raucous "Man Who Paints the Pictures" penned by a considerably older songwriting husband and wife team who weren't part of the band. The guy who did the strings on Love's Forever Changes also makes great contributions to this fine album, which ranges from almost MOR-like balladry ,to experimental collages,to crazed psych. Unfortunately, this versatile and powerful group's three later records were not up to the caliber of their debut, though the 2nd had some fine moments in 'Peace of Mind,' Death is the Dancer,' and the oddly titled G'rand Candy Young Sweet'. Never made it very big, though their first 3 albums charted, and they had a minor hit with the song ' San Francisco Girls' from the debut. Worth investigating by fans of psychedelic rock that doesn't stray too much from pop/rock sensibilities.
