Althnough Saving Private Ryan had some better special effects during the beach landing scenes, I attribute that to the effects technology available now that wasn't around when they made Longest Day. The Longest Day is much better in terms of portraying the D-Day battle from the perspective of both sides, Allied and German, and gave somewhat of a feel for what D-Day was all about. Although a bit hammy (especially John Wayne and Richard Burton) in some places, the film generally was well acted. I think that Robert Mitchum did a great job as Norm Dutch Cota.
