I agree with kamylienne; I believe our ancestors (at least the smarter ones) watched and observed the animals - what they were eating, where they got it, how and even what routes they were taking.

Actually, for this one, the person probably saw snakes and other birds raiding nests and eating well, and they figured, Eh, what the heck . . .
