The Capitain should be in for his brilliance and stretching the bounderies of R&R music, a stunning mix between blues, rock 'n roll and avant garde, and for his poetic, funny end associatieve lyrics. The titles alone still make me smile, Big eyed beans from Venus, Tropical Hot Dog Night, My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains. I guess most people had trouble finding the right entrance to the Captains ship, which was certainly not the so called 'genius' Trout Mask Replica - which is more of an exit- but records like Blue Jeans And Moonbeams, The Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot and Unconditionally Guaranteed. It's not about popularity or sales figures but wether one is truly an original.

Weird? You bet. Brilliant,Hell yeah. Fun,most definately. I don't think ANYONE was more original.I'll take Beefheart over Zappa most any ding dong day, daddy.Sounds like he ate the whole sheet.

Much too weird to ever gain either real commercial success in his day, or Hall of Fame approval. Some of his music was indeed baffling and unlistenable, but other tunes were interesting and innovative. I liked his 1st album "Safe as Milk," especially songs like "Electricity". Trout Mask Replica for the most part was something of a chore, though I enjoy the song "Moonlight On Vermont." Worked with his friend Frank Zappa, whose music is similar in many ways, including a mutual album in 1975. Surprisingly, he was cited by Johnny Rotten as an influence, Rotten had some strange, anachronistic musical heroes like Alice Cooper and the German band Can.

No sure what everyone is so crazy about. Way too avant garde for me. I tried listing to Trout Mask Replica and just couldn't stand it.

Far ahead of his/their time. Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band are just that - MAGIC. Not commercial successful pop, but truly art.
mapiper 03/25/2005
The Captain embodies the temperamental artist persona. While we need to recognize the huge contributions of many of the Magic Band members, Don is still a true genius. Can you say Dada Blues?
docdark 03/23/2005
Clearly so far ahead of its time, other bands should stick their heads in a hole and sob.
