Ranks right up there with steroids as far as cheating goes, as intentionally throwing a game is not cool. The first black eye that tarnished the game.

A nightmarish incident, made all the worse by the blatant ineptitude of the conspirators, the venal self-serving behaviour of the league and owners, and the callous disregard for integrity by all concerned.

Truly the worst event in Major League baseball history, threatening the very future of the game by exposing the ease with which illegal betting and greed could compromise the fundamental competitiveness of each individual game. The unprecedented appointment of a former Federal Judge (Kenesaw Mountain Landis) as League Commissioner proved successful in assuring fans that there was some oversight over the integrity of the game. Coupled with the sale of Babe Ruth to New York, it salvaged fans' interest in the game and brought them back to the game in droves.

i rank it as baseball's worst moment because it brought the integrity of the game into question. much worse than the pete rose situation where one selfish bastard was battling his addictions.

Has to make anyone's top 3 list. . .nearly destroyed the entire credibility of the game. . .lucky for baseball, Ruth's legend was about to grow.
