A disgraceful act committed by a man who in the end showed he cared more for himself than he did for the game he supposedly loved. This isn't small, despite what his apologists would have us believe. No matter how many times Rose has admitted his actions, even to the extent of implicitly admitting he bet AGAINST his own team, there are those who will excuse him.Sorry, its not forgiveable. It is a clause in every professional baseball contract that the player is not permitted to bet on baseball, either directly or indirectly. It is a clause that has been there for over a century.Betting on the game is a suspension offense. Betting on your own team is a long time suspension offense. Betting on them to lose is a banned for life offense.I find it rather appallingly ironic that some of the people who defend him, will vilify Sosa for a corked bat, Bonds for steroids, Alomar for spitting, Brett for losing his temper. This is worse, for it goes to the very heart of the integrity of the game.Rose should have been suspended for life and he was.And he should be elected to the Hall of Fame on the day of his death, and put in a special wing with the others who have disgraced the game by selling it out, like Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte. The only way this crook should be allowed in a professional baseball stadium is if he buys a ticket.

Look what he did when he played the game tho! A lagitimate penalty would have been a life time ban to manage baseball professionally or in the minors. Get him in the Hall!!

I personally he should be in the Hall, but betting on your own ballclub is never going to live you down.

A completely overblown story with very little lasting impact on the game other than keeping the all-time hits leader out of the Hall of Fame until he is very old or dead, and serving as a confusing warning to other players not to bet on their own team only. Baseball enjoys enormous popularity today in spite of its consistently laughable missteps in numerous areas including steroid use, deliberate beanballs, incredible salary spending disparity, unprofitable franchises, inconsistent applications of rules (including strike zones) and increasingly dangerous fan and player interaction. This story, by comparison, is barely a wart on baseball's butt.

A huge story. . .a huge worst moment. . .an all-time hall of famer gets accused of cheating. . .rivals the Black Sox scandal for its lasting power. . .and the legend has yet to be written. . .
