I give it four stars because it is the decade of the Red Sox dynasty, and the era of some fine World Series and pennant races. It was, however, a decade wrapped in greed, with penurious owners, mercenary players, a foolish and greedy rival league, and a level of corruption in the game that came damn close to being institutionalized. The 1919 White Sox making a boat race of the series was not an isolated event, it was the pinnacle of a decade of relentless greed. Owners, players, gamblers, fans, as Bill James says, They all wanted the money, and they all wanted it all.
