The number of the re-enactors is the best Pickett's Charge done yet.
I really recommend this flick for a good portrayal of the battle. It has music, ordinance, musketry, explosions, everything a red-blooded male American wants!
It follows the Shaara novel quite faithfully, and the guides report that many tourists are heartbroken when they discover that there was no Buster Kilrain in real life. I always thought it odd that a bog trotting Irishmen would be the bosom buddy of the scion of Puritan aristrocracy, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

I found out on a visit to the battlefield - it wasn't over the actual ground that the charge itself took place because it's in a national park and the Park Service wouldn't allow it to be used for the scene. For anyone able to visit the Gettysburg area, however, it's easy enough to find the spot. Go down Pumping Station Road, towards the Eisenhower farm, and stay on Pumping Station Road until you come to the point where the telephone poles disappear (the phone line is buried). That's where the charge scene was filmed - they buried the phone lines, covered the asphalt road with dirt, and used the cameras skilfully to replicate the battlefield. There is a barn on the right-hand side of the road that was used in the film (I think it was a Confederate field hospital in the movie).
