I loved The Usual Suspects, and this phantom villain who may or may not even exist is even more effective than a flesh and blood villain. He could be in the room with you and you would never know it. He's everywhere! He's nowhere! He's somewhere... (cue evil laugh)

A brilliant villain in that he was a phantom, we only saw the results of his evil and the terror that it brought to people. The moment we realized that we had been staring into its benign face all along was one of the great moments in cinema.

Although he may technically not have been real, I thought the simple possibility that Keyser existed was pretty scary.. and Verbal was even creepier in his unassuming blandness.

I'm a huge fan of the film, but rating Keyser Soze as a villain is tricky. Since he may never actually appear on screen, his presence is mostly an off camera menace, portrayed through the reactions of various characters most of whom are having their behaviour described by a character who may be lying or telling the truth or who may himself be Keyser Soze. Fascinating, enigmatic and thoroughly enjoyable film, but I can only give Soze 3 stars as a villain.
