I believe the duke was speaking to the battlefield afterward, littered with the dead and dying. A sight and sound that will tear at the soul, and all I've seen of such things are pictures in the Times and other sources.

And he saw his share of both. I find it interesting how it is often the legendary warriors who have the most intriguingly ambiguous quotations about battle and war.
