The Art of War as well as The Book Of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi should be required reading for everyone. The wisdom expounded by these authors is truly amazing and it is such a sadness that much of humanity has no experience with them. They are so applicable to everyday life that the world would be a much better place if people would just but read them. I use the following story from an introduction to The Art of War quite frequently to get the above quote across:
According to an old story, a lord of ancient China once asked his physician, a member of a family of healers, which of them was the most skilled in the art. The physician, whose reputation was such that his name became synonymous with medical science in China, replied, "My eldest brother sees the spirit of sickness and removes it before it takes shape, so his name does not get out of the house.

"My elder brother cures sickness when it is still extremely minute, so his name does not get out of the neighborhood.

"As for me, I puncture veins, prescribe potions, and massage skin, so from time to time my name gets out and is heard among the lords."

Kudos for this listing. It is a pity that this philosophy (and more principle from The Art Of War) is not being incorporated into our foreign policy today.

The core of Sun Tzu. I can't even begin to tell all the times I have used the magnificent advice from this book in my working career. It applies to so much more than just war in the conventional sense. By the way, this is hard to achieve, but it is really the way forward for the human race.

What many leaders fail to understand time and time again is that war symbolizes the ultimate political failure. It isn't something that should be taken as a point of honor, but rather a point of necessity. But the reality is that leaders have to ultimately build up the righteousness of their own cause to give the people the fighting spirit necessary to defeat an enemy. That does not change the fact that to enter a war many times represents a profound failure on the part of any given nations political leadership to manage its foreign or even internal affairs, definitely not something to be proud of.

Certainly a fascinating book (although the list more refers to the quote) but Master Sun's book is an anti-war work. Master Sun believes that battles are over before they are ever fought- take care of business and you should need war. I get tired of idiot big-shot exec types that keep a copy of it in their office for cheap dime-store, alhpa-male philosophy because Master Sun wants to avoid, not encourage, military and philosophical conflict. Get yourself a new translation with the Chinese script on one page and the English translation on the other and impress your friends. . .

The words of Sun Tzu are among the most profound and accessible philosophies ever written. There are a lot of decent translations around. I'd recommend reading one at least once.

How this book is not required reading in every high School in America is shameful. The interpretation by James Clavell is the most generically readable but almost any version will do. I give this book as a present to new associates each year at Christmas and it is always appreciated, though not when first received. If you've never read it, do yourself a favor.
