He is a Sioux or Lakota from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He was an early leader in AIM and was convicted of riot and served time for it. The Governor pardoned Means just a couple years ago. He has made a new career for himself and is an impressive individual to meet.

Russell means has been involved in many of the most recent struggles for Native American civil rights and justice. He joined the American Indian Movement in 1969, joined the takeover at San Francisco's Alcatraz Island, and in 1973 the Wounded Knee seige. He has evolved over the years and is now an actor (Last of the Mohicans) author and libertarian, but still and active Voice for the rights of Native Americans. In the early nineties when his book Where White Men Fear To Tread was published, I met him at a book reading and signing. He had incredible presence and charisma and you just knew that this was a man who would fight to the death for what he believes, or at least that was my impression.
