 | Sundiszno (30) 04/03/2005 | It'll be interesting to see if the Italians grab the papacy again this time around, or if Karol Wojtila broke the near-monopoly the Italians have enjoyed as popes. There's some feeling that the Italians constitute a solid voting bloc and might be able to elect one of their own, but I think that possibly the Catholic church needs to continue on the ecumenical path that John Paul II set. I heard something just this morning to the effect that the conclave may be looking for someone dynamic to continue to reach out to other faiths (and especially to other Christian denominations), and that it is not inconceivable that they may not limit the eliginility pool to only the 120 or so cardinals, but to bishops as well (which would widen the field by about 3,000). I'm getting a bit old and forgetful, but at one point (I think it was when John XXIII died) one of the serious candidates was named Agagenian (an Armenian, if memory serves correctly), but once again an Italian was chosen.
