Is a rating of TEN allowed? Just this once?

It might be that the Vatican is much too, too much, and that the Louvre or the National Gallery of Art are too diverse (?), but the Uffizi simply defies description.

History is all there: Caravaggio (Bacchus, The Sacrifice of Isaac, Medusa); Cimabue; Piero di Cosimo (Perseus liberating Andromeda); Albrecht Dürer (The Adoration of the Magi); Piero della Francesca (Diptych of Duke Federico da Montefeltro and Duchess Battista Sforza of Urbino); Giotto (The Ognissanti Madonna, Badia Polyptych); Filippo Lippi (Madonna with Child and Two Angels); Martini (The Annunciation); Michelangelo (The Doni Tondo); Parmigianino (The Madonna of the Long Neck); Raphael (Madonna of the Goldfinch, Pope Leo X with Cardinals Giulio de' Medici and Luigi de' Rossi); Titian (Flora, Venus of Urbino); Uccello (The Battle of San Romano); Verrocchio (The Baptism of Christ); Leonardo da Vinci (The Annunciation, The Adoration of the Magi); and on and on.

The souls of the artists reside here more vividly than just about anywhere else. It helps also that the city (what: the whole of Italy) is a museum, so your sensibilities are aroused even before you enter the building.

I enjoyed how they organized the gallery to show the evolution of artwork from the two-dimentional uninspiring Middle Ages to the quantum leap in techniques during the Renaissance. Rafael, Bottichelli, Michelangelo, and all the greats are there. Here's a tip. Call a day or two ahead for a reservation. Arrive at the appointed time and you can walk right in and totally bypass the long lines and 2-hour wait.

I could look at the paintings in the Uffizi for days! It's incredible to stand in front of art you've seen in so many books, films, etc. Definitely better in person.
