Edna Ferber's novel was ahead of its time and extraordinarily well-written. Incredibly, Jerome Kern was able to gild this gold with his wonderful music. Some of the songs, such as "Old Man River," will be a beloved part of musical history long after everyone has forgotten what "rap" music was. If you have an IQ of at least the normal range, you will love it!

I love the music, but I can't sympathize with the characters.
