07/07/2006 | A good way to test a musical is to listen to it fifty years after its initial release and ask yourself whether it sounds fifty years old or not. In the case of "West Side Story" (and Bernstein's others, or at least "Candide") to me it sounds like it could have come out last year. The music sounds so sharp and fresh and I think it always will. Although the show still makes us laugh with its gangs of pirouetting, singing, snapping, reckless youths, the show ultimately takes itself seriously, and I think that is quite a feat.

12/07/2004 | This is one of my favorite musicals of all time. I loved the film, the choreography is outstanding, and the songs are very memorable. Can't get enough!

02/04/2003 | I saw the show with Debbie Allen back in 1982, and found it to be an amazing show. Allen was great, and this was before her "fame". Great music, choreography, and everything. Sadly, other adaptions of the show haven't been anywhere as good, especially the film.

02/18/2002 | I hate the music of West Side Story. It gets stuck in my head, and I don't even like it, so that makes me mad! Why do people fawn all over Sondheim? His lyrics seem trite to me--sometimes the words he uses to rhyme are so elementary--"got a rocket in your pocket, keep cooly-cool boy": where did that come from? A fifth grader's poem? What the heck does that mean? It sounds like he wrote them in two seconds, using whatever words came to mind first.

06/09/2001 | This musical is very sweet, touching, funny, and gives a good message about racial tensions. The only thing I didn't like about it was how it followed "Romeo & Juliet" scene by scene. That made it a little predictable, until the end, which was a shock. Overall, one of the best musicals I've ever seen.
