While it attracted considerable fanfare upon its release in 1968, not everyone was immediately captured by its dusky charms. Randy Newman, for one, couldn't resist the temptation to parody "Suzanne," the album's brooding opener, on his 12 Songs album. (Add picture)

When this came out, it sounded like a demo for a bunch of folkish tunes sung (!) by their writer. As time when on, it did become a demo because everybody and their brother covered Cohen's tunes. . . and usually gave them a little better treatment than he did. Sure his voice is ragged and his persona is haughty, but in modern music he is unique. For being Leonard Cohen and persevering in a hostile world, he deserves an extra star. Not Top 100, but thought provoking and moving.

I like "So Long Marianne" (though the chorus is annoying) and the oft-covered "Suzanne" is quite a beautiful song. However, I never really got the appeal of most of his songs, which were often pretentious, and his second rate poetry.He can't sing either, and while for some singers that's a plus, it isn't in this case.
