Some of the best times in my childhood was playing outdoors. It was freedom. Some kids had access to a back gardens, but guess what? It simply wasn't big enough and they enjoyed playing somewhere where there were no restrictions. It was great on social levels as you got to interact with other children in the neighbourhood. As one reviewer pointed out it's not classless, but it is a little dangerous. That's the great thing about being a child. Your living, doing and being as opposed to restricting. One of the biggest problems society as a whole is facing is the bull$hit class system which myself as an individual won't ever buy into. It reflects nothing, but sheer ignorance. I pity those individuals who have to contstantly serve as a reminder to themselves and others they have "class" when in retrospect they show everything but.

Jeez, lighten up a little. I played road hockey virtually from the day I could run, and I know a lot of urban kids who played stickball or street basketball. I can still remember the cry of "Car" which was the signal to grab the stick and the ball and wait for the car to pass. The suggestion of this item by Gentle Jude suggests that its that mealy mouthed, self-absorbed holy roller who has the real issues about lacking in class.

I'm all for a game of ball hockey, but those little road cricket playing heathans drive me crazy!

Uhh, who ever thinks this never played in the road when they were kids.

Not so much in lacking class, but it is awfully dangerous.

Potentially lacks intelligence, but can't really say one way or the other about class.

I played football in the street all the time as a kid. Can't anymore because people go diving down the sidestreets at 60 miles per hour, though.

Seriously, what's the big deal? The kids force you to stop your car for two seconds on your way home, and consequently, you're going to miss the first two seconds of the ten billionth season of Survivor.

No. Kids in cities have nowhere to play. . .and they have little or no 'safe' places to play. I learned how to play hockey, basketball, and baseball in the street. You also learn a survival skill- pay attention or a car will break your leg. (About 3 or 4 kids were clipped in my neighborhood.) A few broken bones didn't diminish the fun and nostalgia of the 'neighborhood street' feel of children's games. Kids watch too much TV and play too many video games and the health results are rather obvious. Don't give me any garbage about how 'dangerous' the street is- it's more dangerous to (1) damage your eyes watching TV and (2) getting fat off of Fritos. One broken arm is far less damaging than those alternatives. . .

It all depends where it is done. If it is just a fun thing, this isn't so bad and I don't mind seeing children do this. But sometimes, it isn't always innocent. Because sometimes, teenagers do this and they can get very rough. Since they hit the ball a lot harder then children and use the neighbours fence as a goal post, you certainly know when someone kicks a goal! Plus it can be intimidating, especially if those teenagers are the rough sort which curse and act tough. I am also thinking on a practical note, the fact that footballs etc can break windows. Then the occupants of that house have to confront the kids who smashed the window. And if they are the rough sort, they are not going to get a very warm response!

Give'em a break and just let them be kids.

Poor Judgement, yes; Lacking Class, well, not really. I know I'm getting older when I see kids playing in the road, sports or not, and wondering out loud WHERE are your parents?!? Before I know it, I'll be using the term whippersnapper . . . .

Actually (looks sheepish), I used to do this with some friends. We'd play football in the middle of our street. However, I live in a quiet neighborhood, so there's not that many cars, and if one did come, we'd make sure we got out of the way.

I live in one of those quiet neighborhoods where kids are rare and I can't ever recall seeing kids play on my street, which, to be honest, is the way I like it. Although I never played on the street as a child, I can understand why kids played on the street. It's usually because it gave them more space to play and they had no where else to go.

I used to do this when I was a child. As long as the child is not too young it's not a big deal. Safety is the big issue here.
CastleBee 04/11/2005
As long as its safe and the kids aren't hurting anyone, then what's the harm? I was lucky because we had a really safe part of the street to play in since our block ended in a dead end. There were only three houses down that way so we virtually had the place to ourselves most of the time. We called it The Block Off and there always seemed to be a kickball game going on there. Also a great place to learn to ride a two-wheeler! Oh, yeah...and I loved going down there on summer nights to stand under the street light and pretend I was on stage!
Molfan 04/11/2005
Does not bother me. as long as they look out for cars. most kids move when they see cares anyway. there ARE those few in my neighborhood will challenge the cars and refuse to move or flip the drivers off when they go by. so four stars instead of five.

I guess I lack class then, lol. I can remember those wonderful Saturdays when my sisters and I, along with every other kid from the neighborhood, played soccer out in the street. It was great fun and the best part was pissing off the old people that drove by. They always gave us dirty looks and if we were feeling really daring we'd stick out our tongues. Those were the days...

Even though I played games in the street my best memories were when I was smaller and stood on the side as the older kids played wiffle ball on the road in front of our house. Myself and the other half pints would guard the transistor radio and sometimes act as referee for questionable calls. Kids who normally would have to be home when the street lights came on would be allowed to stay until the game ended, seeing that everyone was within shouting distance from home. Traffic was pretty light to begin with as the street was not a major artery and in the evenings only people who lived on the block ever drove through our playing area. These days when I drive through the neighborhood and see a couple of kids playing games in the street it brings me back to a happier time in my life and I hope that those kids understand that they're playing in the best stadium a kid could ever hope for.

i agree with tboneya they're just children trying to have a good time. i didn't have a driveway when i was younger so we used to play hockey on the street, no big deal.
