His former 800 metres world record simply epitomises his ability at that time. He was for a decade the greatest middle distance runner.

OK, so he let us all down badly by becoming William Haugue's judo partner, but he was the most beautiful runner ever seen on the track - just picture him floating away from Steve Cram in the LA 1500m final !!
