When I had my job at the Call Center, I worked with some Goth kids, and they seemed to favor black a lot. Not a problem with me, I love black, too. But the Goth kids did liven things up by dying their hair weird colors.

Well, I have yet to see what I would identify as goth without a scrap of black on them, but they aren't wearing it from head to toe like The Matrix or something...

It is true that most goths wear just black, but they mix that in with a little white to make checkerboard/stripe patterned clothing. Some have super bright blonde hair too.

Well here's a little eye opener. What ever I want!
Who would want to be bound by a dress code.
It would almost be as bad as being bound by a narrow mind.
Ignorant people find joy out of discriminating those different to themselves. It apparently makes them feel better for their own inadequacies. They are the ones who have opinions moulded by mainstream society and find it soo difficult to comprehend other schools of thought that they resort to methods of harrassment. Oh bless'em, they know no better.
Since when does it matter what goths wear? Let people be who they want to be, and dress how they want to. If that's a problem then I think a good look in the mirror and find why you can't deal with it.
Surely there are bigger issues to be thinking about.

Okay, this is one of the biggest stereotypes besides the typical "goths are satan worshippers, depressed, suicidal, etc. First of all, goth is a musical movement that came out of punk in the early 80's. The dress code was pretty limited back then: must wear only black, most wear whiteface and black lipstick. However, the goth scene has evolved so much of the years, that sometimes it's hard to recognize it. The whole "goths only wear black" stereotype, no doubt came from the look of goths in the 80's. A lot of musicians during that era like The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc, tended to wear the constant black clothing and spooky makeup. However, goths only wear black is not necessarily true and nothing more than a stereotype. Goths can wear anything they want. There are goths who wear flannel shirts and jeans. A person can be goth and not dress the part. And those that do choose to dress the part, do not always limit themselves to the constant black clothing. Some prefer to wear white, purple, pink, blue, brown, green, red, etc. It's all a matter of personal preference. A goth is a fan of gothic music. Thus, goths are not obligated to dress a certain way. Goth is more than a fashion statement, it is a music, a literature, a way of thinking, etc. As Voltaire states in his book What Is Goth? "goth is whatever you want it to be." Let's just put it this way, there is a LOT to goth. The goth scene of the 80's have created countless subgenres of the scene which include but not limited to: perkygoth, romantigoth, cybergoth, gothabilly, rivethead, ethergoth, glittergoth, etc. For example, cybergoths do not wear dark makeup but wear florescent makeup and bright colored clothes! For more information about the gothic subculture, check out What Is Goth? by Voltaire. It is both comical and at the same time, educational.

Yes goths only wear black! I should know considering that i am one! Black is the color of loathing and being depressed and misunderstood. I agree with gothchick. you people have no sympathy and you are so lame! Quit trying to understand! You won't untill you become gothic! Just leave people alone!

Our next door neighbor's daughter went through a goth period for her high school years, black clothing, white, pasty make-up and black eye-liner. As Alyssa would walk across our lawn to the bus-stop, I'd call out to our kids, Morticia's heading for the bus, better get ready. If they were sitting with me, I'd hum the first four notes of the Addams' Family theme, doing the double finger snap.

How boring would that be? Yes, goths do tend to wear a lot of black and dark colors -- especially for club wear. Yes, most goths go through a phase of wearing all black all the time. Most goths come to realize the value of dressing for the occasion. There is a large community of goths you would never recognize as such outside of a club.
