The income tax exists for a reason; it takes into acount how much someone is earning. This is why a poll tax is so ridiculous (a fact The Black Prince and his economic policy inheritor Margaret Thatcher could not seem to get their heads around); it is not reasonable to expect a rich man and a pauper to pay the exact same amount, and this is what a national sales tax is essentially doing; it would raise the cost of living for everyone by an amount that would be negligible to the rich but absoloutely devestating for the poor.

I can't think of a more effective way to give poor people the economic equivalent of bending them over a table and sodomizing them.

Sure, this way we can in a way control overpopulation by depriving the poor from being able to cover even their most basic needs. Hunger, starvation, disease, crime, suicide, will take care of that.

The income tax, which is progressive, requires that those who benifit most from our commonly owned property, pay a higher price. The wealthy(through their businesses & investments) use the roads, have the police and military protect their property here and overseas, etc........ much more than a family of three that makes $30,000 a year. Of course they pay more. The United States of America became the richest & strongest country in the world since we instituted the income tax. The wealthy should pay a little more now. We need to continue policy that strengthens the middle class. The more middle class the stronger the nation.

I share earthbound's cautionary tone. We're not close to accomplishing this, particularly in such polarized times as these. The Founding Fathers designed a fine system here, one that moves forward based on (hopefully) thoughtful compromise. All voices need to be heard in a discussion like this. For the democrats to articulate their side of this revision to such a fundamental cog in the big wheel, they need to have a few ideas, instead of just opposing anything the other side proposes. They don't look ready to me. Not that the republicans have done a great job either, but at least they are proposing reforms.

You need to be careful here. Sure, this is an incentive to save money, but it greatly benefits those who can afford to save money and penalizes those who, through necessity, consume virtually all of their income. How about a luxury tax, or at least tax exemption on certain types of goods.
