Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria and one of the largest in Africa. Lagos rests on both the African mainland and on a series of small islands in the Lagos Lagoon, making Lagos an important natural port on the Atlantic coast. The city began as a village named Eko, but after the Portuguese established a port there they changed the name of Eko to Lagos. Spices, Ivory, and Slaves were an important part of the trade between Portugal and Lagos. In 1807 Lagos was taken over by the British, and the city was incorporated into Nigeria in 1900. Lagos Island, connected by the Eko, Carter, and Third Mainland Bridges, is the commercial center of Lagos. The estimated population of Lagos is 13.4 million people.
