Tripoli is the capital of Libya, located in Northwester Libya on the Mediterranean Sea. Tripoli is Libya’s major administrative, transportation, industrial, and commercial hub, and is noted for its textile, tobacco, and woven goods manufacturing. Tripoli was founded by the Phoenicians around the 7th century B.C., and was called Oea; Tripoli was subsequently captured by the Romans (1 century AD), the Vandals (5th Century AD), and the Spanish in 1510. Tripoli served as the main base of the Barbary Pirates during the Tripolitan War. In 1911 Tripoli became the capital of the Italian colony Libya. In 1986 Tripoli was bombed by the United States for Libya’s role in international terrorism, thus destroying some of the city. Sites in Tripoli include pieces of standing Roman walls, the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, and the Karamanli mosque. The estimated population of Tripoli is 1.5 million.
