Bamako is the capital of Mali located on the Niger River in the southwestern portion of the country. Bamako is Mali’s administrative center and the surrounding region’s major trade center. Bamako is also home to a river port. Founded in the 17th century, Bamako was a noted market town during the Mali Empire. By the 19th century, however, the city had declined, and in 1883 Bamako was occupied by French troops. In 1908 Bamako became the capital of French Sudan. Sites in Bamako include the Tour BCEAO, the Point du Roi Fahd, the Mali National Museum, Muso Kunda Museum, the Bamako Grand Mosque, and Point G Hill, an area containing caves and rock paintings. Bamako has an estimated population of 1.5 million people.
