Bucharest is the capital of Romania and is also the commercial/industrial center of the country. Located in the southeast of Romania on the Dambovita River, Bucharest has an approximate population of 2.3 million residents. Bucharest survived a fire in 1847 that destroyed 1/3 of its buildings. Bucharest is also the site of many treaty signings including the Treaty of Bucharest in 1913, at the end of the Second Balkan War. Bucharest is home to the Palatul Parlamentului, the world’s second largest office building after the Pentagon.
