Novgorod is a city in northwestern Russia, in the Novgorod Oblast. Novgorod is located on the Volkhov River near Lake Ilmen, and has a population of approximately 290,000 residents. Founded some time between 854-859, Novgorod was a powerful city-state during its early history, until its population grew too large and it could not feed its people; Ivan III incorporated the city into Russia during his reign. Novgorod is home to the Cathedral of St. Sophia. The city’s official name is Velikiy Novgorod.
