Kobe was founded as a city in 1889. Kobe is a long and narrow city wedged between the coast and the Rokko Mountains on the island of Honshu. Kobe is the capital of the Hyogo Prefecture and is one of Japan’s major port regions. The Port Tower, a structure made from red steel, is one of Kobe’s major landmarks. Kobe’s population is approximately 1.5 million people.
