Vilnius is the largest city in Lithuania with a population of over 540,000 residents. Located in southeastern Lithuania, Vilnius is also the nation’s capital city. A sight of German occupation during WWII, Vilnius was also incorporated into the Soviet Union, where it remained under Soviet control until 1991, when Lithuania declared its independence from the regime. Major attractions in Vilnius include the Gediminas Castle and Cathedral Square. In 1995 a bust of rock and roll musician Frank Zappa was placed in the center of the town.
