Vladivostok is a city in the Russian Far East. Vladivostok is situated on the coast of the Sea of Japan, near China and the Japanese island of Honshu. Vladivostok became a part of Russia in 1860 with the signing of the Treaty of Beijing, and is currently the homeport to the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet. Prior to Soviet control Vladivostok was ethnically diverse, but no foreigners were allowed to live there from 1958-1991, and no foreigners were allowed to visit until the 1970s. The current population of Vladivostok is estimated at 592,000.
