Plovdiv (Philippopolis in antiquity) is a gem! In this one city, you can see well-preserved traces of Greek, Roman, Ottoman, Thracian, Byzantine, Bulgarian and Soviet history. The old part of the city is easy to explore on foot. People are reasonably friendly, and justifiably proud of their culturally rich city. Food is inexpensive and often delicious.
