Plovdiv is the 2nd largest city in Bulgaria with a population of 377,000 residents. Over 6,000 years old, Plovdiv’s history stretches back further than Athens or Rome; the city was, in fact, once a part of the Roman Empire and many Roman ruins are still in Plovdiv. Plovdiv came under Soviet control in the 1940’s and stayed that way until the pro-Soviet regime was overthrown in 1989. Plovdiv is a major agricultural manufacturing city.
