Skopje is the capital of Macedonia. The city has over 650,000 residents and is Macedonia’s cultural, political, and economic center. Skopje is located on the upper part of the Vardar River and maintains an economy based on metals, chemicals, timber, and printing. Skopje was founded in the 3rd century. In 1963 Skopje was the site of an earthquake that killed 1,070 people and destroyed 80% of the city.
