Veliko Turnovo is located in north-central Bulgaria, on a ridge, at the base of the Yantra River. Veliko Turnovo was settled as far back as the 4th millennium BC. Veliko Turnovo was the site of the 1876 April Uprising, a revolt against the Ottoman Empire that eventually led to Bulgaria’s independence for the first time since 1393. Veliko Turnovo has a population of approximately 65,000 residents. The city was simply named Turnovo until 1965.
