Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, located at the mouth of the Lagan River. A shipbuilding center, Belfast is responsible for building some of the world’s biggest ocean liners. Belfast is also noted for being the center of Ireland’s linen industry. Founded in 1177, Belfast has been a constant center of strife between Catholics and Protestants, making certain sections of the region dangerous, and dwindling the population as a result. Points of interest in Belfast include the Protestant Cathedral of St. Anne, Waterfront concert hall, and the Odyssey Center, a complex that houses a sports arena and a science museum. Belfast is also home to Victoria College, a noted university for women’s education. The approximate population of Belfast is 297,000.
