Bern is the capital of Switzerland. With a population of 127,000 residents, Bern is the 4th largest city in the country. Located in the west-center of Switzerland, on a landscape created from ice age glaciers, Bern was founded in 1191 and became a Swiss capital in 1848. A form of German, known as Bernese German, is spoken in Bern. Bern is also the site where Albert Einstein began work on his theory of relativity. Bern is home to many theaters and architecture of the medieval era. (Add picture)

Bern was so wonderful. Spent a few days there for a horse show. The show was at an old cavelry place which was so full of history. There are sections of the city with giant chess boards....on the sidewalk! I really didnt see any part of Switzerland I didn't like. Friendly people, great landscape, weather was nice, full of history....I could go on and on

Not only is it an attractive and charming small city (pop. 120,000) in its own right, it's also probably the best home base for spending a few days in Switzerland. The Bernese Oberland, the most popular mountain area, is an hour away by train. So is the eastern shore of Lake Geneva (more worth visiting than Geneva itself). So is the similarly attractive but pricier city of Lucerne. You get the picture.

I loved the old arcaded streets. Th only thing I didn't like was to see the bears begging for food in the Bear Pits.
