Florence is an Italian city located in the center of the Tuscany region. Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and is famous for its architecture and art. Galileo, Michelangelo, and Dante all have monumental tombs in Florence. The city is known for its Fountain of Neptune, the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, San Lorenzo Palace, the Uffizi Art Gallery, and most famously for the Santa Maria del Fiore, a domed cathedral. Located on the Arno River, Florence has a population of 400,000. (Add picture)

Let's see: best renaissance art in the world, Michelangeo's all over the place, top notch artisans with shops all over the Oltrarno, fabulous babes everywhere, and history out the wazoo. Two tips: first, stay at a place south of the Arno -- much quieter and away from tourist mobs. Better yet, do Florence as a day trip from Siena. Second, to avoid the long lines at the Ufizzi and Acadamy (2 hours+) use the phone to make a reservation a day or two before. Show up at your appointed time and you can walk right in.

Firenze is, justifiably, a great city. An awful lot of art and history packed into a small space. Food is great (but many restaurants tend to gouge tourists, so beware). Comments are based on several visits in the 1972-1981 timeframe. Hotels and pensiones are adequate to charming. Leather good used to be a particularly good bargain. Ice cream in Florence is fantastic. Try Il Latini for unique food. Browse the gold shops on Ponte Vecchio if you have the means. Too many sights to mention here - trust your guidebook. Present-day Italian originated in Florence; the Italians say Lingua Toscana in bocca Romana (Tuscan tongue - or language- in a Roman mouth). A great little city. Don't miss it.

A fantastic city for renaissance art with masterpeices everywhere but not much else...and did I say DIRTY?? More like filthy. Outside the Medici Chapels looked like a garbage dump.

It was worth going to see "David" alone. Sure, it's a nice city, but then again it's just another city. I'd rather explore the Italian countryside or go down to the beach instead.

If you're interested in art or art history, Florence is the place for you. From Michelangelo's David to the treasures of the Uffizi Gallery to the beautiful architecture of the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio, Florence has a lifetime's study worth of masterpieces. The city is also very clean and, consequently, lends itself to relaxing walks by the Arno.

The only disappointment I've ever had in Italy. There I was, in Santa Croce with no Baedeker, but - nothing !

The atmosphere is wonderful, a truly beautiful city. Lots of museums. Also, its very different from American cities so you really know that you are traveling. Its got plenty of old churches and buildings and some Roman ruins. The food is better than in Rome, and the people are alot nicer.

Firenze surrounds you with art and history. Incredible food and shopping (especially for leather). Lots of traffic. Friendly people.

Yeah it's beautiful, there's a lot of art, the food is great, blah blah blah. Whatever it was about this city, it just didn't do it for me. Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough to appreciate this place.
