James Cagney, who landed the best movie punch ever-past or future- a one-punch kayo of real life Hall of Famer Maxie Rosenbloom during a prison riot in Each Dawn I Die,while playing a framed newspaper reporter, plays Danny Kenny,a trucker turned boxer in this classic.Cagney, reportedly lost 30 pounds and actually traded punches with real fighters during the filming, which also features a great supporting cast, including Ann Sheridan,Anthony Quinn and Arthur Kennedy as Cagney's brother who's classical music education is paid for by Cagney after he's deliberately blinded in a fight and a newspaper stand is acquired for him by his former manager. To the extent that the movie is corny and dated, this doesn't ring true for anybody who remembers Billy Collins dying from an apparent suicide, a year or so after he was battered by punches from gloves,in which padding was deliberately removed. Trainer Panama Lewis, who was convicted,is currently one of Mike Tyson's trainers.
