Bullet trains work well in Japan but that country is only about the size of California with half the population size of the U.S. crammed into its borders. Crammed conditions and relatively small spaces makes train transportation a quality option. That is not what we have in the U.S., however.
Exactly what the American taxpayer does not need is another flashy expensive burden on the government's coffers. Amtrak is enough of a fiscal drain by itself.

 | sfalconer (21) 06/20/2005 | This is a long time coming and can be found in most place around the world accept in the USA. L.A. to Vegas would be a great route. San Francisco to L.A., Washington DC to New York or Chicago to Detroit would all be great routes. High speed trains a clean and have minimal impact on the enviroment.
