Spent a couple of days there in 1985, when our ship pulled in for liberty. Not much happened. On the first night, I recall a few of us went to the town square and met up with a couple of girls from California on a European vacation. They were cute, but they were just kind of jerking us around. The second day, I went for a jog (the weather was very nice). I went back to the ship, showered and dressed, and was getting ready to leave the ship for a day on the town when the two California girls showed up to the ship. A bunch of us took the girls on a tour of the ship and then we ate on the ship and watched movies in the wardroom. By the time they left, it was 10:00 PM. It was too late to go out, and I had duty the next day. I think one of my shipmates got an address of one of the girls, but nothing came of it. The only other thing I recall is the townsfolk were not too keen on U.S. Navy guys. Several small boats passed us and the occupants gave us the middle finger as they cruised by. Some of the crew also got into a scuffle at a nightclub. My boss got hit with a big metal s--tcan (wish I could have thrown it at him).

I've travelled through a lot of european cities, but Lisbon is, in fact, one of the most beautiful towns i've ever visited.

Somewhat neglected and in need of renovation, this lovely capital sits like a Grand Old Dame on the hills overlooking the sea. The new underground train service is clean and efficient, the people friendly and the atmosphere timely and laid back. There is a fabulous 18 mile long beach at Caparica, a ferry ride across the Tejo river.

Absolutely wonderful. Has a worn down grace to it. A great city to wander around in. Not too big. Great sites les than an hour away. Go to Praia do Meco if you love to swim in big waves and enjoy the sunset from the groovy cafe/restaurant.

Loved it... unlike other major tourist destinations, Lisbon is a city to discover. Great food, the best weather, beautiful streets and plazas...

Like being served a pig's ear with the hair still on it, with entrails to match? Then Lisbon is the place for you. Just think Greece on the Atlantic. Disgusting.

Lisbon as #1 on this list? You must be joking. Lisbon is backwards, no one speaks anything but Portugese (Oh, that's a popular language, right?), it's rather dirty, and the major monuments have gigantic fascist symbols on them. I'm not going back.

While it had a lot of pretty architecture, I never really felt safe in the city. I think they need to first to do more to clean it up.

Right on the water, Lisbon is a very pretty city with a lot going on. One tip-When planning on where you are headed for your next stop, keep in mind that there are multiple train stations. I was looking to take a day trip to Sintra (there are many cool places which are only a short train ride away) and ended up at the wrong train station.

Lisbon is how I imagine Paris was before tourists discovered it... Riding around in the old trams is fantastic and the best way to see the city! Or go up to the castle of St George and enjoy the view, or wander through the Baixa looking at the shops. In the evening go to the Bairro Alto, listen to some traditional fado, visit lots of bars tucked up the side streets. This is a wonderful place.
