Munich is the third largest city in Germany with an estimated population of 1.4 million people. Located on the Isar River, Munich was founded in 1158. Munich has been destroyed and rebuilt twice, once due to a fire in 1327 and the other during WWII. Munich was the site of the 1923 Beer Hall Putch, an attempt by Hitler and his supporters to overthrow the Weimar Republic. Munich became the headquarters of the Nazi Party, and was considered the capital of the movement by its members. In 1972, in Munich, Palestinian terrorists assassinated Israeli athletes during the Summer Olympics. Munich is the annual site of Oktoberfest, a two-week beer festival.
