Munich is the third largest city in Germany with an estimated population of 1.4 million people. Located on the Isar River, Munich was founded in 1158. Munich has been destroyed and rebuilt twice, once due to a fire in 1327 and the other during WWII. Munich was the site of the 1923 Beer Hall Putch, an attempt by Hitler and his supporters to overthrow the Weimar Republic. Munich became the headquarters of the Nazi Party, and was considered the capital of the movement by its members. In 1972, in Munich, Palestinian terrorists assassinated Israeli athletes during the Summer Olympics. Munich is the annual site of Oktoberfest, a two-week beer festival. (Add picture)

I loved this city. The climate is good. The beer gardens are just one of the best ideas ever. The Oktoberfest, well, I attended 13 consecutive Oktoberfests, and that was enough, but it is certainly worth visiting. The museums are fantastic. It is a great city to walk around in. The people are pretty friendly (in comparison to other German cities, but be warned, that is not saying too much - but at least you know where you stand with them). Summer in Munich is just fantastic. If you stay there, stay in the city and out of the suburbs. They soured my Munich stay.

I guess that Munich is so nice because it's in Bavaria (as opposed to Germany). Been there a few of times in the 1970's thorough the 1990's. The natives were mildly friendly, food was good, and everything ran on time (to a fault). It's a nice place to relax. I probably mssed a lot by just sticking close to the Rathaus and the marketplace, but even that can be enough to get the flavor of the place (I think!). Hotels were OK, but most of everything tended to be somewhat overpriced. Traffic was very much in ordnung (I had a couple of Germans literally try to ram me because I mistakenly made a turn against a red light). And the rest of Germany says that Bavarians are too easygoing! A good place to visit for a couple of days.

Munich didn't thrill me too much. I was here on New Year's Day and it was basically filled with drunk college students. Hostels were staffed with rude people, the food was either bad or overpriced, and there wasn't much to see outside of the bottom of a beer stein. Dachau was creepy, but the tour guide was as engaging as a bucket of sawdust.

I've lived there and eventhough it's expensive it's a great place to live! (never spent much money on Oktoberfest but still have been there 3 times--just to see the tourists) You may find the subway system impressive. As well as the Olympiahalle, Olympisches Garten/Dorf and BMW museum.. Can't run out of things to do there, and you'll miss all the life on Marienplatz.

The best place for German(y) tourism. The city has a small town feeling, unlike Berlin and Hamburg, is safe and has many attractions in and in the surrounding area. The English Garden is the best park in Europe!

Rich cultural opportunities (e.g. museums), lots of greenery, beer gardens to sit and chat with friends, almost a Southern European lifestyle
