Nice is located in Southeastern France on the Mediterranean Sea. Nice first gained popularity as a resort area for royals and aristocrats in the 18th century, but with the advent of the railway and other forms of transportation, it soon gained a national popularity. Nice is now the most famous resort city on the French Riviera. Possibly settled by the Greeks around the 5th century BC, Nice was annexed to France in 1793, and then again in 1860. The economy of Nice is primarily based on tourism, but the city does boast some electronics manufacturing as well as commercial fishing and shipping. Nice is the site of the Carnival of Nice. The population of Nice is approximately 345,000.
