Oslo is the capital city of Norway, and has an estimated population of 521, 886. Oslo is known for the many green hills and mountains that surround it, as well as the 40 islands that make up much of the area in and around the city. In 1624 a fire destroyed Oslo and it was rebuilt with a new name, Christiania. Oslo remained Christiania until 1925. Popular attractions include Akershus Castle and Fortress, Norsk Folkemuseum, The Royal Palace, and the Viking Ship Museum. Oslo was home to the artist Edvard Munch, and writers Henrik Ibsen and Knut Hamsun.
