Founded by Nordic People in 870 AD on an area of peninsulas, coves, straits, and islands, Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland. Located in southwest Iceland by Faxafloi Bay, Reykjavik has the distinction of being the largest northernmost city in the world, near the Arctic Cirlce. Reykjavik is noted for winters that have only 4 hours of sunlight, and for summers that have equal amounts of light during both day and night. In 1972 Reykjavik hosted the chess championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. Reykjavik has an estimated population of 113,387.
