Coolest city in Italy. Great name for a girl as well.

I actually preferred the smaller Medieval villages of San Gemiano (Sp?) and Volterra (sp?) to Siena. Siena was full of annoying cruise ship type tour groups with old people in depends undergarments and bowling jackets. The city itself feels more like an American Mall than a medieval city- Gaps, Benneton, ect. pollute the city. The main church is fascinating though- very dark and depressing. Some of the side streets were also cool. But in general, kinda creepy and too commercial. I was really disappointed.

siena is great - not big enough to be dangerous, not small enough to be boring! you should avoid visiting during june, july and august (except for the palio days- july 2nd and august 16th) because it's too hot and too crowded.. don't miss the market on wednesday mornings just outside the fortress (north side).

Simply put, Siena is Italy. It's large enough to have many great artistic and historical attractions, but without the madness of Rome or Venice.

My favorite city in Italy. Siena is a warlike fortress which is as menacing as Florence and Venice are aesthetically pleasing. Motorcycles roar through narrow fortress streets late at night, creating an environment which you will not see elsewhere on the Italy tourist route. The main square is awesome and foreboding, with warlike statues everywhere. Also, Siena is also home to one of the biggest parties in the world - the Palio - in which top racehorses careen through the mazelike streets.
